Howzit Brah...
Just wanted to give you a heads up - Maui isn't exactly the most rider-friendly place anymore. Mahi Pono's been working on those old sugar cane fields, digging deep ditches, and putting up new barbed wire fences all over the place. Doesn't sound like a big deal at first, but the problem is, it's led to most of the Maui trails getting shut down, especially after that big tropical rainstorm back in December 2021 and 2023. And guess what? Here we are in 2024, and some trails are still closed! Thankfully PoliPoli is already open after two years of nonsense closure and you can come up to the beginning of Skyline trail at least.
Some people are still trespassing and carving out new illegal trails because there is no place to ride. After almost thirty years of fighting for a safe place to ride with Maui officials, we have nothing more than one motocross track very well known as freaking hot, windy, unfriendly and dusty place. Definitely not suitable for motorcycle trail, enduro, or trial riding.
Our officials decided to ignore us, motorcycle riders, and instead of helping us find a safe place to ride where we can go legally, have fun, socialize, and teach our kids how to ride, they decided to punish us and go after illegal riding. No wonder DLNR is so frustrated about illegal trails. They didn’t do anything to avoid this problem in the first place.
Check it out here: https://dlnr.hawaii.gov/blog/2020/12/02/nr20-188. It's frustrating because the DLNR should be looking after our land and making sure it's accessible to everyone. We motorcycle riders, just want to stay active and keep ourselves healthy, both physically and mentally. We should have the same options as hunters, hikers, mountain bikers, and soccer players. But they're dropping the ball on that big time. We’re not excusing illegal riding, but didn’t they push us in the corner already? It is so obvious the problem will not disappear by itself.
When We bumped into a ranger not long time ago, he said “you have many trails on Maui you can use, just go to our website, so here is the website https://hawaiitrails.ehawaii.gov/trails/#/for you to see and you can make your own judgement how friendly Maui is to motorcycles.
I get that we all deal with this situation differently. Sure, each of us has our own secret riding spot or path. But if we really want to make things better here on Maui, we need to come together. Let's send a message loud and clear - closing off more and more places? Not okay. Cutting off existing access? Not okay either. And seriously, living with just one tiny, dusty motocross track that's not even suitable for all riders? That's not okay.
So let's stand up for ourselves and make some changes! Let's make sure they hear us loud and clear. And to kick things off, let's all sign this petition: https://chng.it/P6pvkmbqqm. Together, we can make a difference.
On the brighter side, we're really happy to announce that we finally have a motocross shop on Maui. It just opened recently in Kahului, and if you haven't been there yet, you should check it out soon. E-MOTO is located at 310 Alamaha Street.
We can assure you that you've never seen a collection of riding gloves like they have available. Brands like Fox Racing, O’Neal, Fly Racing, Alpinestars, and many others, along with helmets, goggles, jerseys, pants, boots, protectors, and more. Every Maui rider would find something interesting there, and the prices are even better than Amazon. Not to mention, you don’t have to guess your size for this and that - you can simply try the products in stock.
Even if you haven’t started riding yet, E-MOTO is the store for you to shop for a new electric bicycle, moped, or motorcycle. They’re official motorcycle dealers not only for electric bikes but also for regular combustion engines with brands like Kollter, Surron, Nicot, Admit Jet, Yadea, Kontax, Sobowo, Bashan, and Vertigo motors.
They also sell oils, fluids, tires, and tubes you may need for your baby. And if you're not handy enough, they can replace the tires for you cheaper than anywhere else on Maui.
Here's to happier riding for everyone!
